Kerala banana or Nendran Pazham is a widely used fruit in Kerala which is a powerhouse of nutrients. It is a good source of calories and is rich in nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Folate, Niacin, Pyridoxine and Thiamin. It is considered to be excellent for weight gain in babies and can also provide loads of energy, help in digestion, prevent diarrhea and kidney stones, protect eyesight and much more. Kerala Banana Recipes for Babies and Kids

Steamed Kerala Banana Mash

This is one of the nutritious and filling foods you can give to your baby once they turn 7 months after their stomach is adjusted to eating regular bananas. It is excellent for weight gain and can provide relief from constipation.


  • Ripe Kerala Banana – 1/2
  • Jaggery – 1/2 tsp (optional)
  • Ghee -1/2 tsp
  • Water – half a cup

Method of preparation:

  • Take Kerala banana, chop them into small sizes and remove black seeds.
  • Steam the banana pieces for about 10 minutes.
  • Once steamed, let it cool.
  • Mash with a fork or blend it to a puree.
  • You can add water for required consistency.
  • Add ghee and little jaggery for added taste.

Kerala Banana Ghee Roast

This can be given to babies after they turn 1 year and once you have introduced coconut and dry fruits to them.


  • Kerala banana – 1
  • Ghee- 2-3 tbsp
  • Scraped coconut
  • Dry fruits like Cashews and Raisins

Method of Preparation:

  • Take ripe sweet bananas, peel them and cut them into long pieces or half pieces.
  • Heat a non-stick pan and add ghee to it. Add cashews and raisins into ghee. Once done remove the dry fruits. Now roast the sliced bananas in ghee for 5 minutes until a brown color appears.
  • Remove the seeds before giving into babies.
  • Serve these bananas with coconut scrapes, cashews and raisins.
  • You can even just roast the bananas in ghee and serve to your little one.

Kerala Style Banana Dosa Recipe

Kerala Style Banana Dosa Recipe is a very quick pancake made from ripened banana, rice flour and maida.


  • 1 cup Rice flour
  • 1/2 cup Maida
  • Bananas
  • 4 tablespoon Jaggery
  • Ghee

Method of Preparation:

  • Mash the bananas and add other ingredients- rice flour, maida and jaggery syrup.
  • Mix everything together to form a thick batter.
  • Heat a nonstick pan with ghee and start making dosas.

Kerala Banana Halwa


  • Ripe Nendran Banana  – 1
  • Jaggery- as per taste
  • Ghee
  • Almonds / Badam – 3 chopped
  • Cardamom powder – 1/4 tsp

Method of Preparation:

  • Peel and mash the ripe banana.
  • Grease a plate with ghee and set aside.
  • Heat ghee in a nonstick pan, add in the nuts and fry till golden.
  • In the same ghee add in the mashed banana and saute for a min.
  • Add jaggery and mix well.
  • Keep cooking until it gets thick.
  • Once the halwa becomes glossy, add in cardamom powder and fried nuts. Mix well.
  • Pour this into a greased plate.
  • Once it cools down cut into pieces and serve.
